Welcome, members and student members of the ASME Oregon section! Summer is nearly over and schools are starting up again, so I am going to begin this year with a pop quiz (didn’t you hate it when your teachers did that?) Please answer the following question: What do I want to get out of my ASME membership?
I ask this question because the purpose of the Oregon Section is to provide value for our local members. And while dozens of great activities are already planned for 2010-11, your input can make this year even more meaningful for you.
What do we have planned? To start, there will be several plant tours, dinner meetings, and professional development classes throughout the year, starting this month. Our student outreach will include student funding competitions and Student-Meet-Industry Day, as well as hosting an Old Guard oral competition and supporting local FIRST robotics teams. We also plan to increase from previous years the number of community service projects and joint events with other engineering and technical associations. You can keep up with our schedule of events by going to the section website: http://sections.asme.org/oregon/
We are implementing a number of initiatives this year to provide more value to our members. We will hold several of our monthly executive board meetings on the campuses of local universities, to promote involvement of our student members as well as increase turnout from our professional members in different parts of the Portland metro area. We will host résumé writing workshops specifically tailored for student
and professional members. And, we will be providing steep discounts on professional development courses for our members who are unemployed but looking for work.
Although we have planned many activities already, we have the time and resources for more, and we want to hear from you, our members. Do you need help finding a job or developing job skills? Is there a local facility you would like to tour, if only such a tour were offered? Would you like to volunteer as little as two hours of your time, knowing that you were certain to succeed and make a meaningful contribution to the local ME community? If so, please contact me at the address below. Or, even better, come to one of our monthly board meetings and let us know in person! Dinner is provided at these meetings, and the executive board loves meeting new members.
This is your section. I urge you to take advantage of it and tell us how we can better serve you. Together, we can make 2010-11 a year of real and lasting value.
Sincerely,
Bryan Archibald

Brian, I would like to see some PDH on TRIZ, i think that would be an interesting topic, and could be useful to many different people in many different fields.
